PlayStation 4: Sony confirmed specifications

The new Playstation 4

Sony has issued a press release which further explains the technical features of the upcoming PlayStation 4, with specs of PlayStation 4 Eye and DualShock 4 .
As most of you know, on February was announced the PlayStation 4 launch, a somewhat poor news when you consider that there is no picture of the console or prices for its release later this year. The same happened during the presentation in terms of features. Hours later, Sony has issued a statement with all its technical specifications. Let's see how they are and what they can mean for the next generation of consoles.

Features of the PlayStation 4

In more detail we now know that the new Sony console will have a 8 Cores AMD x86-64bit 'Jaguar' CPU, with a GPU capable of generating 1.84 Teraflops of processing, through a "new generation" AMD Radeon. Its 8GB GDDR5 RAM provides 176 GB/sec. of bandwidth. As for storage, Sony will integrate a hard disk with a yet unknown capacity. The Playstation 4 will be equipped with an optical Blu-ray 6x/DVD 8x drive, and will be equipped with ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 (w/EDR). The ports for PS4 are HDMI, analog A/V, digital optical output and USB 3.0, but Sony has not specified the number of ports the console will have.

DualShock 4

The main novelty of the PS4 command is a built-in touchscreen, while the body is very similar to current DualShock. The technical features are:

  • Capacitive touch screen two points.
  • Size 62 x 52 x 98 mm.
  • Weight 210 gr.
  • SixAxis sensors with gyroscope, and six-axis accelerometer.
  • LED Light Bar with three colors.
  • Mono integrated speaker.
  • Micro USB connections, Bluetooth 2.1, expansion port and minijack.
  • Lithium ion battery, 1000 mAh.

Playstation 4 Eye

Sony has also provided specifications to accompany the PlayStation 4 Eye, emphasizing above all, the quality of the two cameras shall be equipped with:

  • Dimensions 186 x 27 x 27 mm (2 meter cable).
  • Weight 183gr.
  • 1,280 x 800 pixels at 60 fps - 640 x 400 pixels at 120 fps - 320 x 192 pixels at 240 fps.
  • RAW Video format and YUV (uncompressed).
  • A field of view of 85 degrees.
  • 4 channels microphone.

Without an image or specs of the new console's body, Sony seems to reinforce some of the weaknesses of the current PlayStation 3. Initially, it has a substantial increase in memory up to 8GB RAM, thus allowing the use GDDR5 to provide 176 GB/s of bandwidth.Regarding the PlayStation Eye 4, Sony will now feature motion tracking and speech recognition hardware available. When compared with the current Kinect, this is a big leap in quality. A higher resolution and a much wider field, since in Kinect only two people fit, Eye 4 improve everything seen so far. Finally, Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the PS4 will not block used second hand games. This will demarcates the rumors that the next Xbox would do it, or even the same Sony was holding registers patents on technology trying to cut the used market.
